Call for Papers

Music and Spiritual Realities International Workshop: EuARe 19-21 June 2023 at St Andrews

The call for papers is closed.

We invite submissions of an abstract of 300-500 words, outlining how you would address our core question: how would you, with your own area of expertise, your own research experience, and your own research methodologies, address or seek to demonstrate the commonly-perceived connection between music and spiritual realities?

We are embracing an open and functional approach to “spirituality”: the “spiritual” reflects a perceived area of human experience beyond the material. For some scholars this may involve engaging with specifically religious experience while for others it may not. Both approaches are strongly welcomed.

We particularly welcome new approaches to this question from the perspective of, or engaged with, the empirical sciences (e.g. psychology, neuroscience, cognitive aesthetics etc).

Revised versions of papers after the international workshop may be included, subject to peer review, in an innovative open-access volume with Open Book Publishers, the UK’s leading open access academic publisher, later that year.

The deadline for abstracts (300-500 words) is 15 March 2023 at 5pm. Along with your abstract, please give details of your institutional affiliation and your current role there. Inquiries and proposals can be sent to: [email protected]. If your proposal is accepted, you will be notified prior to the conference early-bird registration deadline (30 March).
